A PASSION OF JOURNEY

Travelling is one of life’s necessities for Nattapon Kanokvaleewong, designer and founder of Leisure Projects menswear brand. He talks about three favourite places among Thais — Bali, Tokyo and London.

BALI, INDONESIA

“When in Bali, you can enjoy its nature, water sports, culture and parties. It has everything, and it’s not far from Thailand. I like Suarga Padang Padang Hotel on Padang Padang beach, famous among surfers. Everything here is organic, so it’s a bit warm because it doesn’t use much electricity. After a while, I got used to the heat and started to immerse in nature. Seminyak has a different vibe. Try Bikini restaurant, which is a kind of crafty and the food looks unusual but tastes amazing. At night, check out Motel Mexicola, which has a Balinese-Mexican feel. The music is great and familiar — you can practically sing any song that comes on. Later in the night, head to La Favela. For Ubud, I am most impressed with Alila Ubud.”

TOKYO, JAPAN

“I don’t think anyone doesn’t like Tokyo. It’s such a fun place and the food is great. Shopping here is incredibly fun, too. As a designer, I love the fashion in Tokyo, because it resonates with me. Everything suits me perfectly. I normally don’t go to expensive restaurants there because I feel that everything is delicious. My favourite is Kaikaya by the Sea, which sells seafood which is not too Japanese. There are also many kinds of cafe. The most popular one now is Blue Bottle. Pancake lovers should check out Bills in Ginza — it’s beautiful and the food is delicious. I actually don’t do much when I am in Japan — I go to Beams, United Arrows and Beauty & Youth. I recommend going to Hankyu Men’s — I prefer it to Isetan Men’s, because everything looks so tempting!”

LONDON, THE UNITED KINGDOM

“I love London because I studied there and I know every corner. Each place has its own charm. It’s a big city, but not as chaotic as New York. I love Westbourne Grove and Marylebone, where my favourite restaurants like Chiltern Firehouse and Monocle Café are. I also like Soho because there are cool clothing stores. There’s also an udon place called Koya. What makes London unique is that it is home to the best restaurants offering international cuisines — Korean, Japanese, Thai, Chinese, or Indian. Another place I like is Shoreditch House, which is a members-only place, and members can bring guests. On sunny days, the rooftop is amazing. They have many clubs in many cities like Barcelona, Istanbul and Chicago. I think it’s a great place for creative minds — sort of like a co-working space, but also a restaurant and bar.”
