The Greatest King: The Father of Royal Rainmaking

THE FATHER OF ROYAL RAIN-- MAKING His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej cared deeply about those living in rural areas who faced a severe shortage of water for consumption and agriculture due to prolonged drought, delayed rainy season, or unseasonal rain. Drought was solved by His Majesty’s Royal Rainmaking Project. The idea came after His Majesty had visited various places and saw that there were clouds in the sky, but not enough to make rain. If those clouds could be gathered, rain could be made.  Since 1955, His Majesty had read research work on meteorology and weather modification, which he found useful for combating weather change. Then, he expressed his ideas to M.R. Debriddhi Devakul, a renowned agricultural engineer at the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives at the time. M.R. Debriddhi further researched the idea and later the pilot Royal Rainmaking Project was established, under the Office of Permanent Secretary for Ministry of…

The Greatest King: The Country’s Source of Life

THE COUNTRY'S SOURCE OF LIFE Throughout the 70 years of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s reign, His Majesty had initiated more than 4,000 projects for the benefit of the country and the people. Among those, more than 2,000 projects were related to water and irrigation. Having visited every square inch of the country, His Majesty was aware of water problems and the importance of water management. His Majesty’s first water project was Khao Tao reservoir in Hua Hin, Prachuap Khiri Khan province, back in the summer of 1962. After paying them a visit, His Majesty saw that the people lacked fresh water for consumption and agriculture. Therefore, His Majesty ordered the building of a reservoir to collect rainwater instead of letting it flow into the sea. Khao Tao reservoir was built in 1963 and is capable of storing up to 600,000 cubic metres of water. His Majesty believed that water is the…

Power Exclusive: The River of Life for Thai People

THE RIVER OF LIFE FOR THAI PEOPLE “The King is water, and I am the forests who always pay respect to water,” said Her Majesty Queen Sirikit when visiting Ban Tham Tew, Song Dao district, Sakon Nakhon province on December 20, 1982. Their Majesties had visited every part of the country and learned about the hardship that people in rural areas faced. Forests were disappearing, both naturally and due to deforestation. Without forests, seasons would be affected, and everyone would be affected. Her Majesty encouraged people to grow trees near Phu Pha Lek in Ban Tham Tew. Her Majesty entrusted Thanphuying Suprapada Kasemsan and Col Rewat Boonthap to prepare a rai of land to grow around a hundred trees to set an example for the locals. The project was called…
