What men do to their skin not only fails to treat their skin problems but also leads to other problems — breakout, dark spots, and scars. Now it’s time to relearn skin-saving tips, and here are seven things you should do, always.
1. CLEANSE YOUR FACE TWICE A DAY
You only need to cleanse your face twice a day. A lot of people misunderstand that cleansing their face with cleanser often will reduce the skin’s oiliness. It does the exact opposite — cleansing the skin too often strips natural moisture off the skin, prompting the skin to produce even more oil. Cleansing your face often is not the answer. If the skin feels greasy during the day, use water to wash your face, or spray mineral water on your skin and dab it out. That way, your skin will feel fresh without losing its natural moisture.
2. AVOID HARSH CLEANSER
Cleanser which contains a lot of alcohol or soaping agent can leave the skin too dry, and not the kind of dry you want for your skin. When the skin loses its natural lipid, it produces more to protect the skin, and you end up getting oilier skin. Use gel cleanser with the right pH balance. After you wash your face, it should feel a bit slippery, like your face is covered by a thin film.
3. PICK THE RIGHT INGREDIENTS
Look for ingredients like Benzoyl Peroxide, Salicylic Acid, Glycolic Acid or Beta Hydroxy Acid, which can help stimulate skin turnover rate, reduce clogging, and minimise excess shine.
If you have oily skin, choose oil-free sunscreen, which can be lotion or milky lotion.
It absorbs quickly and does not make the skin sticky.
4. USE FACE MASK OR CLAY MASK
Masking your face with face mask or clay mask can detoxify the skin, firm up the skin, and reduce excess oil. It is something every man should do once or twice a week.
5. ALWAYS MOISTURISE YOUR SKIN
Even if your skin is oily, you still need moisturiser, because oil and moisture are two different things. Oily skin can be dehydrated if you are under stress, do not get enough sleep, or experience lifestyle changes. If you don’t like a sticky feeling, choose water-based or gel lotion which absorbs quickly. Use it after you wash your face in the morning and before you go to bed.
6. USE ONLY SKINCARE ESSENTIALS
Only use skincare products as necessary, and choose products designed for oily skin. Look for serum, water lotion, or gel, and avoid sticky, heavy creams. Do not put on too many layers, especially in the morning or in summer, because it will make the skin too oily and might cause irritation or clogged pores.
7. WEAR OIL-FREE SUNSCREEN
Men with oily skin are scared of sunscreen because they feel that the skin gets even oilier. Sunscreen is the best anti-ageing product that everyone should use before leaving the house. If you have oily skin, choose oil-free sunscreen, which can be lotion or milky lotion. It absorbs quickly and does not make the skin sticky.
